It’s Saturday! I did not sleep well last night because of leg cramps. I kept on waking up at night. It really hurt. Leg cramps are just normal during pregnancy because the compression of the blood vessels in the legs. The leg muscles are tired from carrying around all of the extra weight during pregnancy. The leg muscles may be aggravated by the pressure of the expanding uterus puts on the blood vessels that return blood from the legs to the heart and nerves that lead from the trunk to the legs. Leg cramps commonly occur during the second trimester and it may get worse as the pregnancy progresses. So, that means I will be expecting more leg cramps as I am still on the second trimester. Leg cramps may occur during the day and mostly at night.

The other night I stretched my legs, calves and toes before I went to bed. It was effective. I did not have leg cramps at all. But yesterday, I did not stretch my legs. That’s why I suffered from leg cramps last night. There are things you can prevent cramps:

Avoid standing or sitting with your legs crossed for long periods of time.
Take a walk every day unless restricted
Avoid getting too tired
Stay hydrated
Rotate your ankles, stretch your calf muscles and wiggle your toes before you go to bed
